A "Day in the Life" of the Walker Family
So, first off, this is my first blog post ever, and I'm pretty excited about it. I really didn't think I'd get into the blogging side of things with this photography gig, but I quickly realized I don't have a good way of elaborating on the unique stories of the families and businesses I work with, nor do I have an effective method for sharing multiple pictures from each session in order to demonstrate the progression of our time together. I also thought it might be helpful for those who are unfamiliar with a documentary or photojournalistic-type session to see how a session unfolds and how I might personally capture the essence of your family. I believe that each photographer brings a unique perspective and style to a session based on many things, such as personality and past experiences. Two photographers can view the same scene, at the exact same moment, and the resulting images will be completely different.
While I don't really tend to meddle with a scene or request certain actions, I don't believe a photographer is ever truly a fly on the wall. My mere presence is going to slightly alter the environment. However, I will say that, in my experience, my clients and I quickly begin to feel like old friends and sometimes I think they forget I'm there altogether as they get lost in their daily routine. Something about inviting me into normal life builds a bond quicker than one might think. And that's one of my favorite things about these sessions.
The Walker family and I spent over five hours together, beginning with their typical Friday afternoon routine of traipsing through the Franklin Park Conservatory and picnicking in the Palm House. We then drove to their darling Bexley home where I was lucky enough to witness tea time, general shenanigans, outdoor play, bed-jumping, a fish and chips dinner, a dance party, bath and bedtime, and lots of hugs and kisses. Their house is full of handmade items and personal photos from their travels, and I loved hearing about the history of certain pieces.
As is typical, I could hardly wait to get home and load the images on my computer so I could relive the day while scrolling through the many, many moments and selecting the ones I thought best represented the overall family dynamic and individual personalities. It's a true joy to be able to do this for such a loving family. Please enjoy a glimpse into our day together.
