The Art of Panning

You know those photos where the subject is in focus and the background looks like it’s whizzing by? Think of a photo of a biker commuting to work down a city street where the buildings are blurred behind the subject. I recently posted an image like this on IG that got quite a few kind comments about being about to literally feel the wind and the joy in the moment. The technique used in this situation is called panning. It’s not necessarily easy and it takes some practice, but it’s a fun and useful trick to have in your arsenal.

Baby Merrick's In-Home Newborn Session

I really have no words for how precious Merrick and his family is, and the sense of love and connection between them rings true through the collection of photos from their session. Seeing Dad make Gumby talk to entertain the middle child, watching big sister hold her baby brother with such care, the way Mom brushed her hands through the kids' hair...it was all significant and told the story of their unique family dynamic.

Oh, Sadie. Should any one creature be this cute? With her swath of dark hair, her long and elegant fingers and nails, and her gorgeous lips, I just couldn't get enough. I met Nick, Hannah, and Sadie in their room at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio a day or so after the little lady was born with the sole purpose of capturing some of their first moments together.

Her name is indicative of this change, but it is also inspired by the name of one of their favorite Chicago-based restaurants. Amy and Gaitlyn's Intimate Backyard Wedding

When Amy and Gaitlyn contacted me about photographing part of their small wedding ceremony/pool party, I was thrilled and completely flattered. Get ready to swoon.
